Last night we had an appointment at H&R Block to get our taxes done at 6:00 p.m. From H&R commercials we had seen, we thought it was only going to be $30. We thought it best to go with a professional service to file our taxes, so that it's done right and the IRS doesn't come knocking a few months down the road if we accidentally cheated the government of money by filing ourselves. And you can't beat $30 bucks.
Um, yeah, we were slightly mistaken.
When we got to H&R Block I asked one of the workers something that I should have asked on the phone when making the appointment - how much is this going to cost? I soon found out that we were looking at the $200 range. Ouch. Scott and I said thank you, but we would decline the service. Our taxes aren't yet complicated enough to justify spending that amount on filing them.
So, Scott and I had a crash course in filing our own taxes when we got home. We learned a lot!! 5 hours later, our taxes were successfully filed, with only a brief stop or two (one for a quick chip and cheese dip dinner) and we don't think we cheated the government of money.
Now filing our taxes isn't as intimidating and confusing, so no doubt we'll file our own again next year. And hopefully we'll be able to have more than chips and dip for dinner.
